Old Tokaido Road & Hakone Checkpoint

Now that I had finally warmed up from a shower (with hot water). I got checked out of my hotel and stored my bags to grab after my next walk.

I took another walk, this one about 1.5km, down the Old Tokaido Road. A stone highway from the 1600s that was a main route at the time, lined with ancient cedar trees.

Along the way I spotted two iconic things, Mt. Fuji, and the Hakone Sightseeing Pirate Ship.

This ship is one of two that go back and forth on Lake Ashi as a sightseeing cruise. The lines to get on are generally quite long and it is completely out of place compared to the rest of the area.

I arrived at the Hakone Checkpoint, a checkpoint that you would go through to get into Edo from 1600s – mid 1800s. It has been preserved for all this time.

There was a very enthusiastic (read loud) old man that was telling me where to stand to get good pictures, and to climb into the old jail cell.
